Angeli Ladente woven tapestry is inspired by the work of famous artists William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. Angeli Laudantes is a work based on the design by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones original design of 1898 which was originally conceived as a design for stained glass windows in the South Choir of Salisbury Cathedral. Bursting with detail and color, this tapestry is one of the most famous works derived from his designs for stained glass windows. The original designs were described as '4 colossal and sublime figures of Angels.' In this work, John Henry Dearle contributed the detailed millefleurs grounds and blue green acanthus leaf border accented with orange fruit. The angels are playing upon harps of gold, with their wings and fabrics providing the eye with rich detail to behold. The work was commissioned for Mr Charles S Goldman and this original design has inspired further designs by Morris based on the details in this work. This piece is a wonderful work exemplifying Morris' love of intricate detail and Raphaelite design.
